Project Objectives
The goal of the project was to contribute to improved and sustainable livelihoods among mining and fishing populations living in and around the mining and fishing areas in Karamoja and the Lake Victoria respectively. The project objectives were a) people living in and around the Lake Victoria Basin to manage natural resources in a sustainable and profitable manner, b) women artisanal mining communities engage in profitable and responsible mining and extended business activities aimed at increasing the economic contributions and c) policies/byelaws guiding the use of natural resources at local levels by the local government systems and communities around the mining and fishing communities in Karamoja and Lake Victoria Basin are formulated, adapted and implemented in order to protect the environment.
Summary of Achievements/impact
One of the key element of this project are the model households, by the end of the project there were 456 active model households established against the 450 project target. By end of project, 4075 energy saving stoves had been constructed in target households against the 5000 target in the project area. 52 artisans comprising 26 female and 26 males were trained in construction of energy savings stoves in Malongo sub-county. These were supported by the project to construct energy saving stoves in households of the project beneficiaries. A total of 9 functional Natural Resources Management committees constituting an equal proportion of male and female were established and strengthened in both project sites. Three committees were established in Karamoja region with 1 in Rupa sub-county, 1 in Tapac sub-county and 1 at Moroto District Local Government level respectively while 6 NRM committees were established in Mayuge project area in the villages of Wallujo, 2 Bwondha, Bukatabira, 2 Jagusi, these contributed to Natural Resources Sustainable use plans in both project sites. The project established 6 best practice groups in Malongo Sub County namely; Bwondha community tree managed nursery, Walujo environmental management group, Malongo energy saving stove construction group, Bwondha, Nairobi & Walujo Beach Management Units. Additionally, six farmer demonstration gardens covering 10 acres were established in different communities of the project site such as Walujjo, Bwondha, Namungoma, Bukatabira and Jagusi Island. The project also installed two innovative locally fabricated wooden fish ponds for women and youths at Bwondha community nursery with a capacity of 500 fish each pond to reinforce community incomes of the group members. The project also supported Bwondha women group with a solar dryer and trained the members on value addition of fish with an emphasis on silver fish.
