Health Of People And Environment On The Lake Victoria Basin (HOPE LVB)

Project Objectives

1) Increase community capacity to sustainably manage forests, fisheries, and wetland resources to improve livelihoods in the project sites and

2) Develop scalable models for Population, Health, and Environment (PHE) integration that can be adopted by local and national governments, communities, and stakeholders in the LVB.

 

Summary of Achievements/impact: Implemented from 2011 to 2017, the project established and supported 254 model households, with a focus on PHE integration and sustainable livelihoods. The project also constructed over 500 energy-saving stoves in Jagusi and Bussi, significantly improving energy efficiency and reducing deforestation. Additionally the project launched tree nurseries that collectively raised over 450,000 seedlings and planted approximately 433 hectares of trees. Distributed 20 improved goat breeds, increasing livestock productivity and diversifying livelihoods. The project engaged with 12 Beach Management Units to protect fish breeding areas and support sustainable fisheries practices. The project also conducted capacity-building workshops for community members in agroforestry, energy-saving technologies, and sustainable agriculture.
