To progressively eliminate child labor in gold mining in Uganda by addressing policy gaps, changing harmful practices, and advocating for better child protection mechanisms.
Summary of Achievements/impact
Implemented between 2019 and 2020 in Moroto and Bugiri districts, the project trained and equipped 62 beneficiaries with vocational skills and supported with startup kits for small businesses, providing sustainable alternatives to child labor. The project developed the Bugiri Child Protection Ordinance which was approved at the district level, establishing clear penalties for child labor and encouraging the responsibility of parents and businesses to protect children. The project also established community monitoring structures to ensure the continued support and success of beneficiaries’ businesses, promoting long-term change.
