Eliminating Child Trafficking In Napak District Through Integrated Approaches

Project Objectives

The project sought to see that Child trafficking cases are reduced in Napak districts by end of the project. Specific Objectives included; a) Communities are aware of the dangers of of child trafficking in Napak district, b) Increased incomes and livelihoods among households in Napak district through diversified income generating activities and c) Increased crop yield for food and Nutrition security among agro-pastoralists in Napak district.

 

Summary of Achievements/impact

  1. Agro-Pastoral Farmer School Approaches: Three farmer groups comprising 90 farmers were trained in agro-pastoral farmer school approaches to improve crop yields for food security. The three farmer groups were trained by crop scientists from Nabuin Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Nabuin ZARDI) in collaboration with ECO staff. Nabuin ZARDI a zonal agricultural research institute to provide agricultural research services to the North Eastern dry land Agro-ecological zone of Teso and Karamoja. NARO.  The farmers received guidance, crop seeds, and tools for their gardens, with monitoring showed results. The farmer groups were also provided with post-harvest handling equipment consisting of 750 liter silo and a drying tarpaulin. The farmer groups were also trained in post-harvest handling.
  2. Village Savings and Loans Associations (VSLAs): The project supported the three APFS groups to form farmer saving groups to enhance income generation and livelihoods. The groups were trained in VSLA, provided with saving toolkits, guided to elect their leadership committees and registered at the respective Sub Counties. All the three groups had started the first cycle of saving.
  3. Skilling of Youth and Returnees: Twenty-five youth and returnees were enrolled in income-generating skill training programs, such as tailoring, bakery, hairdressing, masonry, and motorcycle mechanics, to improve their economic empowerment and reduce their vulnerability to exploitation. The students graduated and were provided with startup kits to establish enterprises. ECO partnered with C&D to enroll the youth and returnees at Kobulin Youths Skilling Centre since C&D already had an ongoing partnership with Kobulin Youths Skilling Centre.
  4. Community Awareness on Human Trafficking: Three SCREAM clubs (Supporting Child Rights through Education, Arts and Music were established and trained in three schools to raise awareness about child trafficking through music, arts, and drama.The project also conducted community awareness campaigns, radio talk shows, and TV appearances to reach out to the broader community.
